Can I Drive After Getting a Tooth Extraction?

A tooth extraction is typically a minor procedure. In most cases it is relatively quick and simple, but in other cases it can be more complex. If you have an upcoming appointment for a tooth extraction, you may be wondering if you can drive yourself home afterwards. The short answer is that it depends on the situation. Here are some factors that will determine whether or not you can drive home from a tooth extraction procedure.

Anesthesia

The most important factor to consider is anesthesia and the use of sedation dentistry

  • Local anesthesia. Most basic tooth extractions can be done with just local anesthesia. This only numbs the area of your mouth where the tooth is being extracted. After local anesthesia you can safely drive home in most cases.
  • Conscious oral sedation. An oral sedative can be prescribed to you to help you feel more relaxed. You will need to take it before you arrive for your appointment and it will take a few hours to wear off afterwards. You will need someone to drive you to and from your appointment if you are going to be taking an oral sedative.
  • IV sedation. A deeper level of sedation may be used for particularly invasive tooth extractions or for multiple tooth extractions being done at one time. IV sedation requires you to have someone to drive you to and from your appointment as it takes a few hours to wear off afterwards and may leave you feeling sleepy for the remainder of the day.

Number of Teeth Being Extracted

If you are going to be having multiple teeth extracted at once, you may be less fit to drive afterwards. The more teeth you are having extracted, the greater the chance that you will need a deeper level of sedation. Depending on your level of comfort, you may need a prescription strength pain reliever, which could prevent you from being able to drive safely.

How You Feel

After a tooth extraction you may not feel your best. Even if you did not need any sedation, you still may be sore or numb and simply not feeling up to driving. Many patients are simply more comfortable having someone they trust drive them to and from their tooth extraction appointment. However, if you have experience with tooth extraction procedures and you have no concerns, feel free to drive yourself if you feel up to it.

Frequently Asked Questions About Tooth Extraction

Why would I need to have a tooth extracted?

Teeth are extracted for a variety of reasons from severe decay and damage to orthodontic purposes. Damaged teeth need to be extracted in preparation for the placement of dental prosthetics such as dental implants and dentures.

How long does it take for anesthesia to wear off after tooth extraction?

Local anesthesia typically wears off within 2 hours after the procedure. Conscious oral sedation and IV sedation may take several hours to wear off completely.
